Good to know.
What does a brew ratio mean?
A 1:16 filter recipe means 1g of coffee for every 16g of water. Espresso is different: 1:2 means 1g of dry coffee produces 2g of espresso in the cup. Brew water and finished drink weight are not the same.
Do I need all the equipment?
A simple digital kitchen scale makes your results far more repeatable. A gooseneck kettle helps with pour over, but a gentle pour from a regular kettle can still work. Use equipment rated for hot liquids and handle hot water carefully.
Which water should I use?
Start with fresh drinking water that tastes good on its own. Filtered tap water is a useful baseline if your tap water has a strong taste. Avoid distilled water on its own; minerals help coffee extract well.
Why does the same recipe taste different?
Roast level, freshness, water, grind and the brewer all matter. Start here, keep notes, and change one variable at a time. There is no need to chase tasting notes you do not personally notice.
